On January 8, 1950, Baptists living on Anna Maria Island obtained a sponsorship from the First Baptist Church of Bradenton. Their pastor, Rev. Frank T. Anderson, the choir and a few members met with island residents interested in organizing a church on the island. Services were held at the Anna Maria Community Hall until a building was constructed.
On April 23, 1950, the Island Baptist Church was organized and the building program began. Plans were drawn by William J. Bayless. The land at 8605 Gulf Drive was donated by Mr. and Mrs. James Forrester, of Anna Maria, and the congregation continues to meet at this Holmes Beach location.
The cornerstone was laid on December 3, 1950, and the service was held. Rev. A.D. Dawson was the first pastor. In 1952 an additional building with educational rooms was erected and another building followed in 1959. More property was purchased and in 1970 a fellowship hall was built.
In the 1972 the defunct Island Water Works property and building were purchased and the building was converted into additional educational space in 1976.
During the 1980’s the ever-increasing congregation began to outgrow the original chapel, so a new sanctuary was constructed. The doors were opened on February 15, 1987, with the dedication service being held on April 19, 1987.
The building program continued and ten years later, in April of 1999, a new, large, two-story combined fellowship hall and educational facility was dedicated.
In 2007 the church adopted a new name, CrossPointe Fellowship.
In August of 2010, CrossPointe Fellowship called our pastor, Ed Moss to lead the church. Under his guidance, we have added a contemporary service and expanded our outreach to the island.
